Light up the grill! It’s time to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This document was actually written by a committee of five with Thomas Jefferson as the main author. Families across America will celebrate with family and friends the signing of America’s independence on July 4, 1776. On that famous day, the thirteen colonies were declared to no longer be under the rule of Great Britain, nor were they subject to King George III any longer. Why is this cause for celebration? America, as an independent nation, was birthed on that day. America had just experienced the American Revolutionary War, and had won against Great Britain and the tyrannical King George. This was definitely cause for celebration! Today, people still celebrate July 4th with outdoor activities such as picnics, parades, family get-togethers, baseball games, concerts, and of course, fireworks.
Patriotic songs are frequently sung to show allegiance to the United States. We will remember the many who died to make a free America possible. We will raise and fly our American flags and salute the brave men and women who wanted freedom and were willing to die for it. In conclusion, I am reminded of the chorus in Lee Greenwood’s famous song, “God Bless the U.S.A,” “And I’m proud to be an American/ Where at least I know I’m free/And I won’t forget the men who died/Who gave that right to me/And I’d gladly stand up/Next to you and defend her still today/’Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land/God bless the USA.”
