It’s time to get those rods out and reels oiled, but how does one decide whether to fish saltwater or freshwater? Perhaps, it is smart to consider the catch. Do you prefer fish from the ocean or from freshwater lakes and rivers? Think about what kind of fish you will be catching, and if you prefer the taste of saltwater or freshwater fish.
A few of the saltwater fish that are edible are tuna, flounder, halibut, mackerel, and mahi mahi. The best tasting and most popular marine fish seem to be halibut, cod, salmon, red snapper, mahi mahi, and grouper.
First, you will need to purchase a fishing license which can easily be obtained online or at your local convenience store. Next, you will need to consider the essential equipment for the type of fishing that you are going to do. For example, saltwater fishing requires a heavier rod and reel, and line up to 30-lb. test. The best method for catching saltwater fish is using natural bait. Therefore, bait fish and other marine life, such as clams, crustaceans, and squid will catch saltwater fish because these are the prey that saltwater fish target for a meal. Bait fish include menhaden, mullet, eels, herring, sardine, ballyhoo and pilchards.
Freshwater fishermen and women still need a fishing license. However, the tackle is lighter weight, and line is recommended at 6- to 12-lb. test. Also, the natural bait is different. Some examples include nightcrawlers, insects such as grasshoppers or crickets, minnows, leeches, and crayfish. Some sportsmen prefer using plastic lures which mimic worms, and other artificial baits. About one-half of the 800 species of fish live in freshwater and swim in rivers, streams, and lakes. They include trout, walleye, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, and northern pike.
Fishing is a relaxing pastime, and it has become a very popular sport around the world. Once you begin your fishing adventure, you are only one cast away from a delicious, steaming platter of fish to enjoy. So, hang up that “GONE FISHING” sign, and go have some outdoor fun!
