Are you a dog lover or a cat person? If you love dogs, then maybe a dachshund is just what you need. Dachshunds are frequently referred to as “wiener” dogs because of their long, slender build. This breed dates back to the 15th century. For decades, Germans bred this breed of dog, and it is well-known how tough they are. They were bred for hunting, and if you own one, you will see your cute little dachshund wagging his tail as he sniffs out the latest visitor in your yard. He can become so focused that he won’t hear you calling his name to come back into the house. Dachshund means “badger dog” in German, and these slender, short-legged little dogs literally hunted badgers.
A dachshund’s temperament is playful, but stubborn. However, as a breed, they are incredibly loyal to their owners. They seem not to care about their small size, and if a stranger knocks on your door, your dachshund will think he’s a Rottweiler, barking and growling while protecting your entire household from this unknown intruder.
Because this breed was bred to dig and burrow in tunnels while hunting badgers, they will exhibit burrowing behavior and will burrow under blankets and other items when they are ready for a nap.
The size of dachshunds can be standard from 16-32 pounds or miniature under 11 pounds. Standard height is 8-9 inches, and miniature height is 5-6 inches. Their coats come in three types which are smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired, and their color varies. They are easy to care for as far as their coat is concerned, and shed very little. Life expectancy is 12-16 years.
Dachshunds are prone to spinal problems which are due to the breed having a very long spinal column, and a short rib cage. It is very important that your dachshund not be allowed to become overweight to avoid strain to his long back. Spinal problems can require surgery and may be very costly. When shopping for a best friend, you might want to take this into consideration.
However, if you would like a loyal, little friend who will love and adore you unconditionally, then a dachshund may be just what you need!
